Upon its completion in 1964, the Los Angeles International Design Center building in West Hollywood became the nexus of interior design and architecture in Los Angeles. It was designed to be the nerve center and showplace of the decorative furnishings industry, which was exploding in Los Angeles at the time, as well as an office center housing professional groups like the American Institute of Architects, the National Society of Interior Designers, and the American Institute of Designers. The Pacific Design Center Design Gallery is an exhibition space located in the former MOCA building on the PDC campus.

Always at the forefront of its industry, the PDC provides its visitors — which include some of the biggest names in interior design and architecture — with unique experiences including informative seminars, professional programs, networking opportunities, exclusive design services and more. Despite the early criticism of its lack of context, the Pacific Design Center and its surrounding shops appear to have flourished. Like the Blue Building, the two later buildings—Green and Red, respectively—are chroma-intense oversized fragments.

Jim Isermann (b. 1955, Kenosha, WI) is known for his artistic practice that spans an array of media over nearly four decades. Situated at the intersection of fine art, mid-century design, and decorative craft, Isermann’s work is acutely attentive to pattern, color theory, and geometry.

The Center unites the neighboring hills and flat Mid-City area, forming a lynchpin for what we now know as West Hollywood. All of the buildings epitomize Pelli's slick glass skin design, in a Late Modern idiom that obviously embraces exaggerated planes, unusual shapes, and cheerful colors. Pelli conceived of the buildings as oversized fragments fallen to earth, and indeed that is what they look like.

Coupled with the Blue Building’s massive scale is its boldly colored, hermetic skin of bright blue opaque glass, all 4.5 acres of it completely covering the exterior walls. The building’s vast, blue, almost scale-less presence is not unlike the atmosphere itself, with which it interfaces. In this regard the building’s design references the late 1960s-era Light and Space work by Los Angeles artists Robert Irwin and James Turrell.

Ten years later, just after West Hollywood was officially born — and inherited the Blue Whale as one of its few landmarks — Pelli was commissioned to add the final two buildings to the site. Rising from the center of what used to be a low-scale residential and commercial area of West Hollywood, the Pacific Design Center is an enormous, and enormously colorful, landmark both beloved and reviled by its neighbors.
